The Artist’s Role in Generating a Paradigm Shift

Seattle Art Museum Guided Tour

10 am to 2 pm - October 18th, 2025

The Artist’s Role in Generating a Paradigm Shift

Spend half a day touring the Seattle Art Museum with a guided docent on the topic of artists and how they spark paradigm shifts, followed by a group discussion and lunch.

Paradigm shifts in art occur when an artist employs a medium, method, idea, or technique in a novel manner, thereby altering the art's overall meaning, its perception, or its cultural impact. This can occur when the artist is the originator of the new idea. Some shifts come from a new use of traditional techniques, others arise when the artist becomes the concept. Each stop on our tour reveals how these innovations influenced generations of artists to come.

We’ll learn about how these breakthroughs were received in their time, the risks involved, and how they echo into today’s cultural landscape. This tour is about the moment an artist saw things differently and changed the conversation forever. Ideal for curious minds, creative thinkers, and anyone interested in the power of art to spark change.
